From Rocky to Rocky Balboa

As the earnings roll, hundreds of Rocky fans ascend up the famed Philadelphia steps. The final image is of Rocky Balboa's transcendence. He is standing alone on top of the famed steps, starring out on the sunset of his life and covered with pure white snow.

Kozlovic and Sacred Subtext

Stair Lift Story

According to Lindvall, author of Sanctuary Cinema, Hollywood has overtly catered to the Christian community. This is in a large part due to the Legion of Decency's consistent monitoring of Hollywood films from 1930 to 1970. What Kozlovic, author of some Christ-figure articles, draws our attentiveness to is the "less appreciated and even more prolific... Underground holy stories packaged as sacred subtexts in apparently non religious cinematic fare."

Kozlovic and Christ-Figure Semiotics

Kozlovic lifts up the Christ-figure imagery as the most prevalent of all sacred subtexts Underground in favorite cinema. According to Kozlovic, a Christ-figure can be identified by singular actions and symbols that link them with Jesus Christ. Before he proceeds to list and define these essential existing elements that link characters to Christ-figure imagery, he clarifies by saying that all these elements do not have to be present in order for the character to evoke this numinous description fidelity.

Here is a list of a dozen structural characteristics pertinent to my diagnosis of the artifacts Rocky I and Rocky Balboa:
1) beginning their mission at 30,
2) Name references,
3) Holy Associates,
4) Miracles,
5) Child-like Faith,
6) Poverty,
7) White Toga,
8) Cruciform Pose,
9) Cross Imagery,
10) Sacrifice,
11) Resurrection/Rebirth and
12) Ascension.

In the rhetorical diagnosis section, this paper will analyze this description paradigm by cross referencing the Gospel description and other films with the aforementioned artifacts.

Description Of Artifacts

Being a good fighter is not about how hard you can hit "it's about how hard you can get hit and keep arresting forward." These poignant thematic words echoed throughout the Rocky series and culminated in a speech he gives to his son in the final episode Rocky Balboa. These films maintained a focus on fighting the good fight of faith and the inner turmoil that we all deal with. This internal storm is expressed externally in form of training and boxing.

Rhetorical diagnosis Of Artifact

Mission Begins at 30

According to Luke 3:23 (Niv), Christ begins his mission around the age of 30. This is an element that links filmic Christ-figures to Jesus. Clark Kent did not fly out of the Fortress of Solitude and begin recovery the world until he reached the age of 30. Stallone says the fancy we see Jesus over Rocky in Rocky I is because, at that occasion in time, he was being chosen for a spiritual journey. We find out a merge of scenes later that Rocky is authentically "pushing 30."

Name References

Several Christ-figures also have names that sound like Jesus Christ. Although we know Christ is not Jesus' last name, some heroes share the J.C. Initials: John Coffey from the Green Mile, John Connor from Terminator: Salvation, and James Cole from Twelve Monkeys (Kozlovic 14). Other titular examples would be Neo "the one" aka Mr. Anderson "son of man" from The Matrix; Truman "the true man" from The Truman Show, or Mr. Carpenter from The Day the earth Stood Still. Karnick, author of Rocky, Christian Warrior, points out the correlation in the middle of the name Rocky and the name Peter: "his name is a clear reference to the disciple Peter whose name, Petra means rock and whose clear statement of Jesus' divinity was the rock on which Jesus based the Christian church" (Karnick).

Holy Associates

Kozlovic mentions some possible characters that parallel Biblical characters that were associates of Christ: Judas, John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene were among the most popular. Judas appears in Dead Poets Society, turning on their teacher claiming everybody should look out for themselves. The Judas character appears again in The Matrix, selling out Neo and the others so that he can return to blissful ignorance.

In Rocky I and Rocky Balboa there is a holy connect named miniature Marie who parallels the Mary Magdalene figure. She was "sexually tagged" when she was young because she hung out with street thugs on the corner. Rocky takes her away from the "yo yo's" on the street and warns her that she should stop smoking and hanging with these guys or else she will be determined a "whore." He protects her again in Rocky Balboa.

Miraculous Healings

Jesus wept and prayed over his dead friend Lazarus; then, Lazarus comes back to life. In the Rocky series, Rocky cries and prays over his comatose wife; then, she comes back to life telling him that all she wants him to do is "win."

Child - like Faith

This imagery is drawn from a tube in scripture suggesting we become like children in order to "enter the kingdom of heaven" (Matt. 18:3 Niv). If the Christ - frame does not come from another world, land or time, then their miniature intelligence is explained straight through a mental handicap like Karl Childers from Sling Blade, opportunity from Being There, John Coffey from Green Mile or Brother Francis from Brother Sun Sister Moon. Rocky is accused of being slow and "punchy" which is explained later as being the consequent of a relaxed brain. This makes him come across as very harmless and child-like.

The Poor

Several Christ - Figures adhere to Jesus' message that "it is easier for a camel to go straight through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter into the kingdom of God" (Matt. 19:24; Mark 10:25 and Luke 18:25 Niv). This verse is prefaced with Jesus telling a wealthy someone to show mercy to the poor and walk a more humble life. Rocky is also connected with poverty. When we first see him, habitancy call him a bum. He wins a miniature money for a small fight; then, he is seen showing love to habitancy on the street. Rocky also works for a loan shark as hired muscle. In one scene, he accosts a man that is supposed to pay up. The man begs Rocky for mercy and Rocky lets him go, yelling "you should have planned ahead." Even in Rocky Balboa he is seen in the marketplace showing mercy towards the poor and living a uncomplicated life.

The Look

Aesthetically, there are times when the Christ-figure wardrobe mirrors that of the Jesus portraits we have grown to know and accept as the image of Christ. This includes the long hair and full beard, but another image is the white toga/hooded robe look. This is noticed in Star Wars: A New Hope with Ben Kenobi. A man with long hair, a full beard and the hooded robe saves Luke. He proceeds to teach him about his "true father" and the power of good. E.T. Is another superior example.

In every Rocky film he's shrouded in a hooded robe just before his battle, but the shrouded scenes in the first film roughly appear last supper-ish. This is followed by an intense prayer and a similar "let this cup pass from me" scene. He jokingly says to Adrian "hey, how about I stay in here and you go out there and fight?" He then heads down the aisles wearing the robe which displays a meat sign on his back.

Cruciform Pose

During Easter we see some films on television that depict this hanging image of Christ's posture on the cross. This posture has been coined the cruciform pose. Christ - figures in film often emulate this very well-known image to possibly foreshadow their own trials. Neo is carried off by the machines in this pose. In Spiderman 2 Spiderman is stretched out in this manner while recovery a subway full of habitancy from their impending deaths.

When Rocky races to the top of the famed Philadelphia steps for the second time in Rocky I, he lifts his arms in victory but he also stretches them out in this well-known pose as if saying to the training sessions "it is finished."

Cross Images

This is directly connected to the former structure. Crosses often appear on or around the Christ - figure. Rocky crosses himself before every fight. He even begins wearing a cross throughout the series. In the very favorite Rocky Iv, he carries a log in a way that closely resembles one of Christ's Stations of the Cross.

Sacrifice

This is probably the most favorite recurring Christ-like motif in favorite film. Shane sacrifices his life to save a group of farmers and ranchers from tyrants. Blaine from Casablanca sacrifices what wants most to save the world. Indiana Jones from Raiders of the Lost Ark risks his life as he is lowered into the "well of souls" to save the world from the Nazis. And the list could go on and on. This is what Vogler calls the hero's sacrifice. Stallone mentions that Rocky permanently "turns the other cheek."

In Rocky Balboa, he helps "little Marie" get a great job; he risks his life to safe her from thugs; he even hyperbolically suggests laying down his life for her. When she asks him "why are you doing this? What do you want?" he answers the questions with a inquire "why do you have to give something to get something?" This dialogue corresponds with him textually and subtextually bringing light into the darkness, as he screws a new light bulb into the porch light socket. The gift of light is somewhat blinding at first. As Rocky drives off he says "let there be light." This scene juxtaposes dialogues about a free gift and creation. This scene subtly makes covert and overt allusions to generation and regeneration.

Resurrection and Rebirth

Ben Kenobi says "if you assault me down...I will return even stronger." We also consideration this motif in two other robed Christ-figures: Gandalf and E.T. Where E.T. authentically dies and comes back to life, Gandalf appears to fall to his death in Lotr: Fellowship of the Ring; then, he returns stronger than ever in the sequel. In the Matrix there is a scene where Neo (the one) is shot dead and checked for vitals, but he still comes back to life.

For Rocky, the point of rebirth and resurrection is in the center of the ring.

Not only does the term "ring" connote the semantics of origin and an eternal circle but image wise the very first series of shots in Rocky I strongly allude to this idea of sacred origins. In the opportunity shot we see that the name of the gym that Rocky is boxing in is called The Resurrection Gym. Stallone later reveals that this boxing match is taking place in a former church. This foreshadows that Rocky will be resurrected in the ring and it establishes that for Rocky, the ring is his sacred place.

After his first fight he vacillates in the middle of finding at himself in a mirror and a picture of himself as a child. No words are spoken but subtextually we quit that he is not happy with what he has become and he desperately wants to start over. He essentially says this later in Rocky I when he yells to the heavens about missing his shot in life and starts banging on the walls in frustration.

During the title fight in Rocky I, Rocky gets knocked down and everybody in Rocky's angle tells him to stay down. Rocky symbolically dies, probably mental "this is it... It's over" but then he gets back up and from that point on we know that he has been reborn in the center of the ring. When he wins the crowd begins chanting his name; this also mirrors prodigal son imagery. He has been welcomed back home. He is overwhelmed with a sense of love and approval and has become reborn.

This rebirth is reiterated at the end of Rocky Balboa. Once again, Rocky has been knocked down in the center of the ring. The death of his wife haunts him throughout the film. His mind crosscuts with images of the grave and we think this could be the final fight of his life. He appears to want to die in the ring the same way Apollo did; then, he gives himself the "keep arresting forward" speech in his head. Once again - he is reborn.

Ascension

Kozlovic uses outsider terminology to recite the idea of Christ-like transcendence. He references John 8:23 where Jesus says "I am from above... I am not of this world." some filmic examples are John Coffey being described as "falling out of the sky." K-Pax and E.T. Also came from above, but this outsider idea also encompasses returning to the beyond also known as ascension.

He refers to passages in scripture that say Christ ascends up to where he was before (Niv, John 6:62) and "a cloud received him out of our sight" (Nasb, Acts 1:9) leaving us "gazing up into the heavens" (Nasb, Acts 1:11). Two good examples of leaving us gazing into the heavens at a savior would be Powder and Armageddon. We stare up at Powder disappearing into the sky with a bolt of lightening. In Armageddon, our hero sacrifices his life to save the world. The whole world stares up at the heavens where he ascended and they applaud his heroic efforts.

Some other examples would be when E.T. Is telling his disciple to "be good" and then he takes off into space. In The Truman Show, our main character signs off saying "good morning, good afternoon and good night" then he walks up a stairwell of clouds and disappears into the sky. With Rocky I the ascension is more of an emotional one. Rocky is overwhelmed with the chanting crowd's approval and unconditional love of his girlfriend. The love and approval lifts him up towards a spiritual transcendence.

The ascension in Rocky Balboa begins with Rocky walking out of the arena and pointing to the heavens. In the end he stands a top the great stairs, covered in white snow.

Checklist for uncomplicated Senior security

Safety issues are all the time a concern in the home of a senior and also something for you to think about if you are finding for a seclusion home. Being implicated with safety in your parent's home is like being a detective. If you see mom practically trip over a throw rug then you will either tack that rug down or immediately remove it. It is the less unavoidable areas that can rise up and bite us.

If there is a small raised transition from the carpeting to the tile that she has not had a qoute navigating but might have a qoute with in the hereafter then this is something you need to take care of before the trip and fall. Be proactive you will gain great piece of mind. So here are some areas which you might take a look at.

Stair Lift Story

Design-Remodel-Move

There are a few options available to you if your aging parents are still in their two story home that you grew up in. This area needs to be approached with caution, love and understanding.

  • Option #1 Sell the house homestead and move them to a single story house. Good idea but in this real estate shop it could be problematic to get that done. Have you spoken to the folks about moving? Did they write back with joy and laughter and applause? You might want to read Seven Reasons Why Seniors Want to Stay Home first for some hints on how they feel about moving.
  • Option #2 Move their living quarters downstairs. If the house is a large house home then most likely they will have a den or a formal living room down stairs which could easily be adapted to their bedroom. However, most downstairs baths are just a powder room so some expansion of that might be necessary.
  • Option #3 install a stair lift. These stair lifts are easily installed and contribute unblemished safety for your parents. One thing to be unavoidable of is that the lift will run on battery power if there is an electrical outage in the home. If you are not mechanically inclined then you might want to have someone else install it.

The Bathroom

You take water and tile and mix in poor balance and eyesight and you have an area primed for falls. Stepping into a tub is not a good idea for an elderly someone so the first thing to look at is replacing the tub.

  • Whether you look at one of those step in tubs or a tub shower combo that is a step in you will growth your safety quotient considerably. If the unit you chose doesn't have a molded in seat then use a stand alone one. The elderly like to sit and use the hand wand when showering.
  • Also look at strategically settled grab bars. The ones that suction onto the wall have gotten good but I don't know if I would totally trust them. If you are refitting the tub with a walk in tub shower combo then now would be the time to install 2x4 blocking in the wall that the grab bars could be screwed into.
  • All faucets should be the lever type and not the knob. The elderly commonly have lost gripping strength and have arthritis as well and cannot grip the faucet hard adequate to turn it off. By doing this you will cut the risk of serious scalding accidents.
  • You should either replace the toilet with a handicapped height one or you can get one of those raised toilet seats. either place a grab bar within reach of someone on the toilet or you can get a frame that kind of sits over the toilet which allows the someone to use some arm muscles instead of weak leg and hip muscles.
  • If the bathroom has dual vanities then look at converting one of them to wheel chair access. And don't forget to widen the door to at least 36" again for wheel chair and walker access.
  • If potential convert the doorways to pocket doors; this will gain you a lot of interior space.

The Kitchen

So many dangers here and you should look at safety in the kitchen for your parent as your parent looked at safety in the kitchen when you were little.

  • Don't put anything heavy or bulky in overhead cabinets. Just as they are sliding a pot onto an upper shelf their strength gives out and the pot comes crashing down.
  • If the stove has burner controls on the back panel replace the stove. You don't want mom reaching over a boiling pot to turn down the burner.
  • Here is a no brainer: no towels hanging over or close to the stove.
  • To go along with the above tip make sure there is a working fire extinguisher with in reach.
  • The elderly reach a point where they no longer easily cook they just nuke. You easily don't need a microwave with all the bells and whistles just one that will defrost, cook and reheat. Think simplicity here and make sure the numbers are large and readable.
  • As in the bathroom all faucets should be lever type.

Other Rooms

  • Doors should be refitted to the lever type of cope for the same intuit that faucets are lever type.
  • Look for any throw rugs and get rid of them.
  • Try not to use extension cords at all but if they must be used make sure that they will not pose a trip hazard.
  • Look at direction of travel and pathways. If the path from the couch to the kitchen or bathroom has a table and chairs encroaching into the path then rearrange the furniture so that the path is straight. If mom bumps into a table this could just be adequate to cause a fall.
  • In the laundry room use a lower cabinet for the cleaning items instead of the cabinets over the washer dryer.

Lighting

Lighting and adequate of it should not be overlooked. Every room that mom goes into or through should be inspected for adequate lighting. Please keep in mind that adequate light for you may not be adequate for mom. There should be general lighting as well as task lighting.

  • Every room that has two entrances should have a three way light switch installed at each entrance. You could try petition sensor lighting but it has been my sense that a someone is halfway into the room before the light comes on.
  • Lighting in the kitchen should be of both the general and task and again have adequate wattage so that mom can see oven/microwave controls and read instructions on boxes.
  • Use plug in night lights in bathrooms, bedrooms, hallways and any other location where mom might travel after dark. They have night lights that are flat against the wall and only come on after dark but contribute adequate illumination to see if there is an obstacle in the way.

Garage

  • If mom is still driving then you should seek her car for any new dents, scratches or paint marks. This could indicate that she is loosing depth perception and potential loss of peripheral vision. It may be time to have a talk with her about surrendering the car keys. But you good have a plan as to how to approach this sensitive issue and what solutions you have in mind.
  • Make sure there is ample room for the car as well as for her getting into and out of the car. This might mean getting rid of some stuff in stable to allow this.
  • If there is a power outage then the stable door opener won't operate. Rig a light weight rope with a cope to the existing overhead door and string it to the side of the stable out of the way. Then see if mom is capable of releasing the door and raising it. You might have to get a stable door technician out there to adjust the spring tension on the doors.
  • I have seen many senior's cars where the trunk and the back bumper are damaged from the stable door hitting it. One clarification is to place the car in the stable where it should be and hang a tennis ball from the ceiling to where it makes sense with the windshield in front of the driver. This however takes the focus off of where the car is going to the tennis ball. You might try attaching a 2x4 to the floor so that mom drives gently into the stable and feels the 2x4.

Exterior

  • You need to continually be considering pathways colse to the house for trip hazards. Vines that have grown over a path, a flagstone path that was once fine but now is uneven or even a hose that has been left out can be perilous to the someone who has petite visual acuity.
  • If mom can still do a few stairs make sure a sturdy railing is there for support. If not then a ramp should be installed. Consult with your local part of the Ada for guidelines.
  • Install a safety type screen door on the front door so that she can still be get when opening the door to strangers.
  • Sliding doors out to the patio should have a zero threshold. This will prevent tripping now and accommodate a walker, wheelchair or scooter later. This can be terminated by the installation of a small ramp.

Personal

  • Telephone communications are foremost to mom, either it is calling out or receiving calls from family. There are cheap phone systems available that have manifold cordless hand sets. If you have adequate of these in the rooms that she lives in together with the bathroom then the phone will be no more then a few steps away when it rings.
  • Have a talk with mom about not responding to telephone solicitations for money and not to open the safety door to someone she does not know.
  • There are personal alarm systems that sense urgency services when a button is pressed. This can be a pendant or a wrist type device. Some of these systems can be costly and have a monthly subscription fee as well. One that we have sense with is the Guardian Alert law which has no monthly subscription and it can be programmed to call a house member, a neighbor or 911 in any order or just 911. Mom can talk directly to the someone on the other side through the gadget she is wearing. It's pretty cool.

This list seems like a lot but as you begin to check things off you will find that you are becoming more unavoidable that mom is safe in the home that she wants to stay in.

Brick by Brick

"The great victorious men of the world have used their imagination... They think ahead and originate their mental photograph in all its details, filling in here, adding a minuscule there, altering this a bit and that a bit, but steadily building, steadily building." Robert J. Collier (1876-1918), Author

I recently spent most of a week sorting out my children's variety of Lego™. They are now teenagers, so have lost interest in the delights of putting together, brick by brick, piece by piece, fantastic constructions. From a pile of 'bits' the most anticipated creations emerge. A building, a spaceship, a racing car, a scene from one of their favourite films... There were so many pieces that we decided to sort out as many buildable kits as possible, then divide them up among confident families that we know with youngsters who love Lego™ and would use it. It has brought back many memories, but also made me realize how much we have moved on.

Stair Lift Story

It also made me think about how we perform the things we have set out to do. We have a goal in mind. Perhaps we want to lose weight, get fitter, build a new business, write a book, pay off our debts or some other aim. So we have the end in mind - as in the photograph on the cover of the Lego™ schooling booklet. However, all we have at this beginning point is a pile of 'bits'. How are we going to take those bits and make something out of them? Brick by brick, of course.

For example, you want to lose 14 pounds. The final goal. How can you do this? Firstly, you need to reconsider how many pounds per week you realistically want to lose. (It is carefully salutary to aim at no more than 1-2 pounds per week, although you may find you lose more than this in the first week.) First brick. Then you need to reconsider how you are going to lose those pounds. Second brick. To lose one pound of weight per week, you need to have a calorie deficit of about 3500 fat per week, or 500 per day. Are you going to cut the estimate of fat you eat each day by 500, (do you honestly know how many you consume in a day?) or are you going to up your operation levels to burn an extra 500? If you select to cut calories, you will firstly need to make a pretty spoton evaluation of what you are engaging to begin with.

Third brick. This could involve holding a food diary and weighing and measuring everything. Or it could be more general, by noting down everything you eat and drink and finding if there are things that you could cut back on, or cut out, by paying attention. The daily chocolate bar, the biscuits at tea time, the after-dinner ice cream. Or if you select activity, then you need to resolve how you will add adequate extra to make up the 500 calories. Taking the stairs instead of the lift. Time on the Wii Fit™ or the Xbox Kinect™. Adding more walking whenever you can. Participating in an practice class. There are many ways that you can up your operation and not all of them involve high-priced gym memberships. Fourth brick. Or you could incorporate cutting fat and engaging more as a means to get to your goal.

Once the first layer of foundation bricks are in place, you will be able to build on these until you have achieved your goal. Simple! Well, uncomplicated in theory, of course. The steps we need to take to perform approximately any goal are pretty well documented in books, how-to manuals and the Internet. Guidance can be found all over the place and much of it is good. The only thing that is required to perform success is you - taking action, development it work. In the end, it doesn't matter how many books you read, how much facts you have at your fingertips, unless you start building your own dreams, brick by brick, step by step. Without operation dreams remain just that, dreams.

So as we accelerate straight through the year, what are you going to do with the pile of 'bits' lying in front of you? Will you sweep them out of the way, to be sorted later, or will you start putting them in order and use them to fabricate something wonderful? I'd love to know which you select and how you progress....

The Invention of the Knife and protection Tools of Today

Of all the tools in our society, only the wheel and the lever can compete with the common household knife for the title of All-Time Most Useful. As necessary in the kitchen as it is on the battlefield, and necessary in a wide range of trades and crafts, the knife is one of the construction blocks of civilization.

Knife History

Stair Lift Story

Not only is it useful, but the knife is possibly the oldest human tool. Rudimentary knives have been discovered among what anthropologists call the Oldowan tools - the oldest stone tool assemblage in history, used between 2.5 and 1.5 million years ago by various hominids fluctuating from Australopithecus to Homo habilis. These earliest knives were basically well-sharpened rocks used to butcher dead animals. Homo habilis was, agreeing to current scientific consensus, the species that made the imaginative leap of fashioning similar sharp points from pieces of wood and bone. Later, while the Paleolithic Era (a time period which overlaps with the later Oldowon tools) these wood and bone knives gave way in their turn to knives made from flint, a extra form of the mineral quartz, then copper (introduced ca. 8000 Bce), bronze (ca. 3300 Bce), iron (1500 Bce), and (later still) steel (ca. 1400 Bce), as the craft of metallurgy emerged. The bronze and iron knives, while they lacked the greatest sharpness of flint knives, offered greater durability.

Technological advances have continued to yield new options for knifemakers; today knives made of carbon fiber, titanium, earthenware and other materials are common. But archaeologists, knife collectors and enthusiasts, and organizations such as the American Bladesmith Society, continue to uphold the craft of old-fashioned metal knifemaking. The centrality of knives to civilized decorum in the Western world (they are one of the three utensils used with any meal), their proximity in many myths, legends and ceremonies all over the world, and their appeal to antiquarians and forces historians ensure that knives remain a meaningful, not just practical, part of human culture. From surgery to electron microscopy, from diving to diamond-cutting, knives are everywhere, and they occupy leading places in some of world culture's greatest stories - the reduce of Isaac, or the obsidian knife of Titlacahuan, Quetzalcoatl's brother, in Toltec mythology.

Knife Safety

Of course, knives are, if improperly handled, as perilous as they are necessary. But with a little common sense, and knowledge of knife safety procedures, that danger can be minimized.

- always cut away from your body when using a knife.

- Don't try to grab a dropped knife in midair. Let it fall, then pick it up by the handle.

- Never run with a knife, and don't carry a knife while being propelled in open air.

- If lending your knife to person else, hand it over to them cope first.

- Knives aren't toys. Don't point them. Keep them considered sheathed or folded when you aren't using them.

- Don't use a knife as a lever. In other words, don't use a knife to pry open a door, which can cause the tip to break off and potentially injure someone.

- Keep your knife sharpened.

- If you or person else is cut, call 911. If the wound is manageable, apply pressure to the area near the wound while elevating it (if possible) above the level of the heart.

Along with advances in knife technology come advances in knife safety. Safecutters.com represents the most modern evolution in knife safety. Knives come in all shapes and sizes, and no home or office is complete without a well-made utility knife or safety knife. Safecutters.com offers a practical and safe line of package openers and safety knives, perfect for employees working in shipping and receiving and in mail rooms, for pro and amateur movers or whatever who works with interesting boxes, whatever who sells interesting supplies or shipping supplies, and - lastly - whatever who receives packages in the mail.

Parenting Tips For Infants: 3 1/2 To 5 1/2 Months

"To be or not to be? That is the question." - Hamlet

To be!: 3 ½ to 5 1/2 months

Stair Lift Story

With apologies to Will Shakespeare for my loose translation. You and your child have begun a journey of discovery together. The experiences that you offer will determine either he/she travels straight through a barren wilderness or a rich and sharp landscape where fresh horizons continually beckon.

The journey will shape your child irrevocably. At the end of the first three years either vital connections between neurons in the brain have been or have not been made. We have no option but 'to be' any way we are free to select for our children to what degree they 'will be' and what they can become.

"When I look into the time to come it's so sharp it burns my eyes." - Oprah Winfrey

Isn't that the way we want our children to view the world?

Parenting Tips For Infants: 3½ To 5½ Months - Characteristics

  • Your child will now come to be increasingly interested in his surroundings
  • Watch and stare at movements and changes in scenery.
  • Will come to be more strict when grasping objects and explore them with her hands.
  • She will now be able to tell your voice from man else and will listen intently to sounds and voices
  • Now he is able to lift his head and chest using his forearms for preserve and can turn from side to side and roll over
  • She is able to sit with support.

Parenting Tips For Infants: 3½ To 5½ Months - Language Development

What you can do:

He will benefit from listening to a range of separate sounds so try and contribute opportunities each day.

To help him find sounds that are within his immediate surroundings ring a soft bell directly to the side of his head about 45 cm away from his ear and see if he can turns towards it.

Help him to recognise and react to his own name by oftentimes saying it to him slowly in a loving way.

Recite nursery rhymes or sing songs to him while you undertake those routine everyday chores that babies create!

This will help him identify and react certainly to your voice.

Don't make the mistake of reasoning that because he doesn't talk yet he won't understand. In fact he is starting to associate singular sounds with actions and objects (Nouns and verbs being the easiest vocabulary to finally introduce to your child.)

Parents often looked very disbelieving when, having asked how best they can help their child at home, are told naturally to take time to read to them making it an enjoyable experience.

I think some parents wanted to teach the theory of relativity. Pay close attentiveness to the sounds your baby makes and try to imitate them. He may now be happy to spend some time alone 'practising' his sounds when he wakes up. You may even begin to 'recognise' some of the sounds he now makes like aah, ee and ooo. Acknowledge to them enthusiastically and with clear pleasure.

Parenting Tips For Infants: 3½ To 5½ Months - Intellectual Development

What you can do.

Continue to do what you have already been doing.

When she is lying on the blanket give her some safe and sharp toys to explore with her hands..

She will want to put things in her mouth.

Encourage her to do this with safe toys.

You can now introduce inflatable toys which your child will delight in watching and kicking!

Take your baby with you on short shopping trips to allow him to sense and enjoy separate environments.

Use a mirror to show him his face and facial expressions. Play with him.

The more experiences you contribute the more you stimulate the vast network of neurons in your child's brain creating and reinforcing the learning pathways. It is these connections that will form the basis for all time to come learning and reasoning ability. Just as highways link city to city so these pathways associate one cell to another within the brain. And as with road networks there are all the time more prominent places, like large cities. The brain also has 'more prominent places' or processing centers, eight in all. We call them intelligences - linguistic, visual, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal (social), intrapersonal (introspective) and naturalist intelligence (Howard Gardner).

Learning intelligences, how you recognise them and how they impact on how we learn will form the basis of another course.

Parenting Tips For Infants: 3½ To 5½ Months - Social/Emotional Development

Always Acknowledge enthusiastically when you baby accomplishes whatever be it sounds or actions.

Maintain close interaction with him - rocking, cuddling etc.

Always hold him when feeding from a bottle and never let him hold his own bottle in bed.

Have fun! Tickle him and join in with his laughter.

Play with your baby by showing him how to use a range safe toys or gadgets and delight in his efforts to grasp and explore them.

Peek a boo is a great game to help encourage him to react and show delight when interacting with house members and friends.

Try and anticipate his needs by recognising the separate cries he makes so he knows he can rely on you to meet them.

Don't wait until he is asleep before putting him to bed. Do it when he is obviously tired so he can get used to falling asleep on his own - something we singularly failed to do as parents with embarrassing consequences!

I often fell asleep reading a story while my child son clambered out of bed - quietly not to wake me -and went down stairs to fill in his mum he'd got me to sleep again.

If your baby does awaken at night then allow him time to calm himself and go back to sleep.

He she won't all the time need feeding or changing but if he persists after 5 to 10 minutes it's best to check!

The prominent thing is to help him learn how to get back to sleep on his own.

Parenting Tips For Infants: 3½ To 5½ Months - Motor Development

How you can help

Your baby is going to need free, open spaces to roll, move and wriggle arms and legs.

If you hold objects slightly above and in front of him while he is lying on his stomach he will lift his head and chest using his forearms for support.

Lay him on his side as this will encourage him to roll onto his stomach or his back.

He will now enjoy sitting supported on your lap or leaning up against pillows.

This strengthens his upper and lower torso.

Encourage him to explore toys with both hands.

Exercising the body is good for the mind. We have now discovered that citizen who practice their fingers usually like concert pianists oftentimes stay alert into old age. Children need to learn fetch spatial awareness and this means a baby must have opportunities to use his body freely.

In another course we see how spatial awareness can be used very effectively to heighten memory recall.

It's what the Romans did! I'm digressing, time to get back to your baby.

If you place toys within his reach he will be encouraged to reach out and grasp them.

Put pressure against your baby's feet with your hands and encourage him to push against you.

Hold him in a standing position for 30 to 45 seconds and allow him to preserve his weight on his legs.

Lay your baby on the floor with his feet near a crib, gym or noisy objects on a string tied between legs of furniture to request kicking practice.

My Love - A Poem About One's First Love

There are three main reasons why someone comes to Christ and receives Him as Lord and Savior of their lives and drives men and women to their knees before Him.

One think is through a realization of the holiness of God and the unholiness, wretchedness of man and the perfect realization that God is all and you are nothing. Second think is brought about with a very real and remarkable fear of God's wrath and the final expression of His wrath being hell. Plus, the reality of what we in effect deserve from God is to spend the rest of eternity separated from Him in hell. Third think comes about by falling head over heels in love with the loving Savior, Jesus Christ.

Stair Lift Story

To fully realize how much Jesus Christ loves you and how much you mean to Him. My think for first accepting Jesus Christ into my heart and life was think whole three. No one introduced me to Him, He just revealed Himself to me in a personnel, intimate way that I will never forget. At the start of my freshmen year in high school, all of my childhood friends moved away and I was left alone. In addition, I did not feel a lot of love at home from my parents and my one younger brother. I entered high school alone, feeling unwanted, unloved and consequently became depressed.

Looking back at my freshmen year, I would say the hardest part of being and feeling alone was not in effect being alone or feeling disconnected from population but instead feeling that I wasn't primary enough, for whatever to want to get to know me.

I always knew about God but I did not know Him; there is a vast unlikeness in the middle of the two. Growing up, my parents would often take my brother and me to church. And while elementary school I would go to Bible class which was held once a week in a trailer and lasted about an hour. Church and Bible class is where I learned about God and some of the stories in the Bible. However, as far as I can remember, no one in effect taught me how to know God personally and intimately. Having no one to talk to while my freshmen year, I decided to take on the endeavor of getting knowing God by talking to Him.

My getting to know God started in conversations with Him, actually, I'm the one that did all of the talking so I guess it wasn't much of a two way conversation. Many times these conversations took place in an oak tree. However, whenever I talked to God I would ask one desire, which was for God to take my life literally. Finding back, I realize that I wasn't getting to know God and in effect had no real clue to who He was. For God is the God of life and not death. And when one realizes God's love for them and embraces that love then one cannot help but to live life to the fullest. Jesus said, "..I have come that they may have life and life to the full." (John 10:10).

God is a rewarder of those who seek Him, no matter how one starts the seeking process. A integrate of months into my freshmen year of high school, God sent me a friend and someone that He can talk through. His name was Ken Caster and he was a junior at my school. I met Ken while I was sitting alone at the lunch table in the cafeteria. As I was eating Ken approached me and sat down. He then did something that no one else had ever done, he asked me my name.

Ken did not immediately start preaching to me about Jesus. in effect he didn't talk at me, spilling out theological and evangelical useful information. Instead, he plainly started request questions about me, he started to get to know me. I did not know it the time but it was at that moment I was talking face to face with God; for by just seeking to get to know me, Ken was displaying the character and heart of Jesus. For in every believer God lives and when we walk in obedience in accordance with God's holiness and His love then Jesus, who is also God (John 1:1-3,14), is manifested through the life of the Christian.

After several weeks from the first meeting with Ken I started going to Campus Life, there I met more of Ken's friends who speedily became my friends. Campus Life was a ministry which met once every other week. while the meetings there would be an icebreaker, then an open conference about contemporary issues and how they reveal to the Christian life. At the end of every discussion, a leader or someone would wrap up the conference and the meeting would close with a public time. someone working with Campus hunt for Christ were in fee of these meetings. I am sure that while these meetings, Ken or someone told me about Jesus but I don't remeber whatever telling me the Gospel or salvation.

Towards the end of March of my freshmen year, Ken invited me to see a Christian comedian named, Ken Davis in concert. It sounded fun so I agreed. In April Ken and some of his friends picked me up and took me to the concert. while the show I could not remember the last time, if any, I laughed and not only laughed but laughed so hard, that at times it was hard for me to breath. Towards the end, when the laughing stopped, Ken Davis proceeded to tell us about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This was the first time when I heard about the Man, the God and the Savior that I would fall in love with.

At the end of his message Ken Davis asked everybody to bow their heads and not to think about anything. He asked, while heads bowed, to let the Holy Spirit move and allow God to talk to our hearts.

This night was the first night when God spoke and I listened. While my head was bowed God did speak to me, not with words but with His love and I began to feel and sense Jesus Christ's presence, His loving presence, all nearby me and inside of me, and for the first time in my life I did not feel alone. Then Ken Davis asked if whatever wanted to accept Jesus into their heart and if so to come up front.

Without thinking, I gently stood up with my head still bowed and I gently made my way up to the stage. As I was development my way up I began to lift my head and shame started sliding off me like butter and acceptance started to clothe me.

While I was walking down the aisle and up towards the stage, I did not look to the right or to the left but looked level ahead then up towards the heavens, it was like I was Finding level into the loving eyes of the Savior.

For it was that night I saw the face of my love but it wasn't my fleshly eyes that beheld Him but my spiritual eyes that beheld Jesus Christ, my love. It was that night I knew I would never again be alone. After much rejoicing with Ken Caster and his friends I went home and headed up stairs to my bedroom.

In my bedroom alone but yet not alone I made a vow I said, "Jesus, I want to live for you no matter what. If it is cool or uncool, if it is the right thing to do or the wrong thing to do, I will live for you. Since then I started conversing with God and now I try to do the majority of the listening. When God speaks to me, many time I hear his words and feel His arms nearby me and His love warming my heart and spirit on cold, dark nights.

It was on one of those nights that I wrote my first poem called "My Love." Other poems would corollary in general about Jesus, which comes from my new heart that I received the night when I suitable Jesus Christ into my heart and life, at a Christian comedian concert in April of my freshmen year of high school.

My Love

I remember when I first fell in love,
your gentles like a dove,
your voice calling me
to be your love.

I remember when I first held your hand,
as I promised to cherish you
in this foreign land.

When times come when I feel lost and scared,
I hear your voice saying,
"You have nothing to fear,
remember you are mine,
All of this because I care."

For I know, I am the apple of your eye,
before you I was nothing but now I am something,
by the corollary of your love that will never die.

There was a time, long ago
when you proved your love for me,
and showed me once and for all,
You will never let me go.

For my sins you died upon a tree,
with mighty action,
on the cross,
you displayed your love for me.

When I heard you had died, I started to cry,
but tears of sadness turned to tears of joy,
when you arose and appeared by my side.

Soon you told me you had to leave,
to prepare a place for me,
where we will be together for eternity.

My love, there are still times when I feel discouraged,
when I grow suddenly afraid and loose all courage,
tough still I am quick to rejoice,
for you have promised me,
you will come back for me,
and with your sweet voice,
call me by name to join you in eternity.

Stair Lift Story

One should understand that, for the physically challenged, simple daily activities like walking up and down the stairs could pose much corporal danger resulting from falls. Standing Stair Lift benefit - Two Reasons Why Standing Stairlifts Make Sense

When you are injured and are faced with a long-term mobility handicap preventing you from using the stairs, and you live in a multi-story house that you just love and won't leave for the world, it is time to reconsider purchasing a stairlift. Standing stairlift is a kind of a stairlift where you stand throughout the ride instead of sitting down in a chair.

There are significant disadvantages of a standing stairlift over the more common chair stair climber, or chair lift, especially when it comes to safety. As an example, it is difficult or impossible to use a seat belt when standing up. So there good be good reasons why you settle to go with a standing stair lift.

Stair Lift Story

In this record we will go over two of the most leading reasons why you would prefer or need a standing stair lift rather than the more common type of a "sitting stairlift" or chair lift. The two main reasons why people opt in for a standing stairlift are: highly narrow stairs in their house and inability to bend your knee properly. Let's look at both reasons separately.

Narrow stairs

When the stairs you want to use in your house are very narrow, narrower than 30 in. In width, it makes sense to reconsider a standing stairlift. When standing, there is no seat and no legs protruding over the stairs, allowing for a comfortable ride over narrow stairs.

Knee issues

When your current corporal health does not allow for a adequate bend of one or both knees, then a sitting position in a stairlift makes minuscule sense. It just might be good to opt for a standing stairlift instead.

Warning: Using a regular sitting stairlift in a standing position is a positively bad idea. First, sitting stairlifts are usually not designed to withstand the standing position. Their foot rest plainly is not strong enough. So standing up may be bad for the stair lift, and worse, may endanger yourself too.

Notice: Before opting for a standing stairlift, reconsider a "perching stairlift". This is a middle ground between a sitting stair lift and a standing stairlift. It will contribute more security than the standing stairlift as you can lean on the appropriately height-adjusted seat and you can even use a seat belt. You will still be able to not bend your knees much, and the wide width of the stairlift may still fit your narrow stairs.

How to Lose Weight Without Leaving Your Home or Office

No matter where you work or live. Here are some tips to help you fit in some extra weight-loss strategies into your daily routine:

1. Squat often. Many citizen spend a solid 2-3 minutes twice a day brushing their teeth. As they brush, they stand still in front of the mirror. If you added a few lunges or squats to that routine, then you would spend a solid 4-6 minutes a day working out those important thigh muscles. The thigh muscles are one of the largest muscle groups in your body. Not only are they the quickest to be transformed once you start to work them out, but they also help you lose weight quicker when they are loaded with muscles instead of fat. Therefore, work out this large muscle group to get toned up and slimmed down quickly.

Stair Lift Story

2. Lift the jug while pouring the milk. If you have milk or juice with your breakfast, spend a few minutes doing curls with the bottles as your coffee brews. The early-morning burst of power and muscle activity will help you raise your body's metabolism for the rest of the day. You'll also find that by production small work-out sessions the first thing you do in the morning, you are more likely to continue to do them throughout the day.

3. Take a double step. While walking up the stairs, take a double step instead of just one. By extending your leg slightly higher, you are increasing the angle from about45 degrees to 90 degrees. The increased angle means that your muscles will have to work harder to get your body up the stair than if you were taking smaller steps.

4. Tip toe even when you're not trying to be quiet. By tiptoeing colse to your home or office, you will find that your calves advantage the most from the extra effort. Stay as high on your toes as inherent for a long number of time. Or, raise and lower your body using only your calf muscles. The more you work those calf muscles, the tighter they will be in the long run.

5. Roll your neck. Most citizen store a large number of their stress in their necks. When you keep stress in your body, it affects the number of fat that you withhold in your belly negatively. Therefore, by rolling the stress out of your neck, you inadvertently publish the fat storehouse from your stomach. The effects of this practice are both immediate, as you will begin to feel relaxed, as well as long term, as your whole body starts to slim down.

No matter how busy you are, it is important that you take time out to treat your body well. Stress, caused by a busy lifestyle and fast-paced work environment can not only increase the fat on you body, but it can deplete you of the power you need to practice properly. Therefore, it is important that you remind yourself to take care of your body, even if you cannot sample New Jersey's splendid parks and gyms everyday. A tiny movement goes a long way to a healthier lifestyle.

Planning a Second Story increasing

Planning is the key when taking on a scheme that involves removing your roof.

Before you plan your 2nd story, study what obstacles will need to be dealt with. Examples of items that need to be addressed are:

Stair Lift Story

-Size of ceiling joists, can they maintain a 2nd story floor?

-Are mechanicals run over the top of existing ceiling joists? (plumbing, electRic, Hvac)

-How much overhang is on existing roof and are there any utilities fastened to it.

-Is the existing roof stick built(built on site) or a truss roof(manufactured).

-Is the roof sheathing 1x boards or plywood?

-How many layers of shingles are there?

-Are there any Stacks or flues protruding through the roof such as a fireplace chimney, furnace flue, or vent pipe.

These things need to be carefully so the increasing can be built as fast as possible.

When beginning the tearoff, the first thing that needs to be addressedis the soffit. Removing this first will free up the rafter ends when it comes time to remove them. Sometimes utilities like the phone and electrical lines are attached to the soffit. These should be moved by their respective utility company.

Now you can tearoff the roof. The easiest way to remove the shingles and sheathing is with a circular saw. It's best to use an old blade with a lesser estimate off teeth because it will be trash when you are done.

When cutting the roof away, start at the ridgeboard and run the saw in the middle of the rafters all the way to the rafter tails. Repeat this cut every 32" from one end of the roof to the other. These pieces, assuming they are plywood, can be removed in 32"x 48" squares. There will still be some weight to these pieces but this will make them more managable. Working from the ridge, these squares are loosened with a sledgehammer. Once there is sufficient room, you can use a prybar to free them from the rafters. My popular technique is to use a 6 to 8 foot 2x4. Slip it under the loosened piece and use an adjacent
rafter as a fulcrum. Push down on the 2x4 and up comes the plywood and shingles. This same policy works with trusses also.

If the roof sheathing is planks, the cuts should be made 48" to 64"apart. If there are 2 or mre layers of shingles, you should be able to roll these sections down the rafters.

Once the roof sheathing is removed, the rest of the components canbe removed. If the soffit and fascia haven't been removed yet, thisis someone else occasion to do so. Once that is gone the rafters can be removed. The rafters can be detached from the ridgeboard by using a sledgehammer or a sawzall. After they are loose from the ridge, they can be twisted off the top plate.

Trusses can be a minuscule trickier. After the sheathing is removed, most of the truss work will have to be cut out. The only part left would be the bottom cord that holds up the drywall ceiling. Since most of these cords are 2x4's, larger 2x lumber will have to be sistered alongside for added support. As long as there are bearing walls below, this 2x lumber could be 2x10's, 2x12's or engineered lumber such as I-joists. Each situation is different and what is used is spect by an engineer or architect.

In most cases, the electric (conduit), plumbing and/or Hvac run over the top of the ceiling joists. Usually, the easiest way to deal with this, is to build a knee wall high sufficient for the new floor joists to clear these obstructions. This makes the second floor deck higher so it will make your stair run longer. Making sure you have room for the stairs in this instance is someone else consideration.

Once the deck is down, the walls, ceiling joists, and roof of your new increasing can follow.

Whatever situation might you have, good planning will make this taskeasier and quicker. Time is of the essence when it comes to removing a roof. You want to protect the existing structure and all of your requisite possesions that are left inside.
