What is the Best Cardio Machine for Your Workout

I think this is an age-old question, but today I want to address what I consider to be the pros and cons of some of the main cardio machines out there. Each one has their benefits of course, but I think that each can also be used for different situations. So let's get started:

Treadmills

Ah, the ever popular idea of running in place. I've read many articles that state that running on a treadmill is the best way to burn fat. And, in many cases I would have to agree with them. Some of the really nice things about treadmills is that they give you the same feeling as running in the country, but without the country smell. So the big pros to doing your cardio workout on a treadmill is that it is a great fat burner and cardio monster. Some of the down sides are that you experience the same impact that you would doing regular running, which depending on the condition of your knees might not necessarily be a really good idea.

Elliptical Trainer

One of my personal favorites, the elliptical trainer gives you a really good workout with out the impact that the treadmill does. That is probably the biggest benefit to the elliptical. One of the problems that sometimes comes with an elliptical is that it is fixed in the way that it moves. If you've ever sat back and watched people run, you'll notice that different people move differently when they run. I have yet to notice a standard when it comes to every-day joggers. But on an elliptical, you have to fit the machine and that can become somewhat uncomfortable. In the gym that I go to there are only 2 elliptical machines that I like to use because my knees always hit the joints on the other ones because of my height. Other than that, I love using elliptical trainers!

Stationary Bike (Upright)

Another classic, the stationary bike has been around for a long time. For those of us with somewhat bad knees, these are great for staying low impact and also getting a good workout for the quad and other legs muscles. My wife and I both have some knee problems, and the doctor always says that riding a stationary bike is a great way to help that out. Overall the stationary bike is a great alternative for your cardio workout.

Recumbent Stationary Bike

This seems to be a relatively newer version of the old bicycle, and at first I have to admit I really didn't like it. What I've found since then is that it is a very deceiving cardio machine. Let me explain: when I first used a recumbent bike I felt like I wasn't getting much of a workout. Since then, I've found that over time you can work up quite a sweat with a recumbent bike. In fact, that's what my cardio workout was this morning and after about 30 minutes I was sweating really good! The other great feature of the recumbent bike, is that it is the easiest cardio machine to get a workout and some good reading at the same time!

Stair Climber

One of the great things about the stair climber is that, just like the stationary bike, you can make it really hard if you want to. The stair climber can even be used as part of your leg routine if you make the resistance high enough! Stair climbers give you essentially the same effect of running up and down stairs, without having to actually go to a stadium to do it.

So, when it comes to doing a cardio workout, I've found that its very important to mix up what you do on a rather consistent basis. Cardio is one of those things that can become very boring, so have some fun with it!

Curved Stair Lifts - An Overview

Many people have already experience the benefits of having a stair installed in their home. If you are also thinking of buying one but are worried that you won't find one to fit your case, don't be. Curved stair lifts are custom made and can be fitted on just about any staircase whether it's curved, is oddly shaped or has multiple landings.

Unlike straight stair lifts that can be bought as is and installed by anyone with good DIY skills, a curved unit is tailor made to the size and shape of your staircase. It's designed and installed to easily cop with bends, straights and landings.

Not surprisingly a curved stair lift price is substantially higher than that of a straight model. The cost can't be worked out until an on site survey is performed. The actual cost of installation lift will depend on several factors: the number of bends, the angle of the bends, the length of the actual staircase, and - most importantly of all - the time taken to install. Installation time should not be underestimated; installing a curved unit takes anything between 3 weeks to 3 months.

Curved chair lifts are very flexible. You can decide on which side of the stairs you want to install the track - the track is always mounted on the stair treads and never on a wall. The actual profile of your staircase will be a determining factor as to which side to place the stair lift. Your supplier will discuss this with you when they carry out a site inspection.

There is a healthy market for used stair lifts. However, you should be aware that this is primarily for straight units. Curved units are custom made therefore the track that is fitted to the exact shape of your stair will be of no use to anyone else. So, if you want to sell your curved lift at a later date you can expect to sell only the chair, motor and controls.

Even if you don't sell your curved unit you may want to sell your home. Depending on who buys your home, you might be able to leave the stair lift in situ, otherwise you will have the expense of first removing it before your vacate your home.

Because curved units are individually made, be prepared to pay your supplier a substantial deposit when ordering it. This usually does not happen with a normal, straight model but the one you are ordering will only fit in your house and if you pull out of the deal the supplier will not be able to resell it.

Find a reputable supplier - these can be found quite easily on the internet - so that you can discuss which brand name is best for you, whether it be a Summit, Ameriglide or Stannah stair lift.

The above points are just a couple of minor considerations you should bear in mind when deciding to buy a curved stairlift. The advantages of being able to access all the floors in your existing home far out way these points - especially when compared to the stress and expense selling and moving to a single storey residence or getting home help.

Finally, if you do buy a curved stair lift, make sure the suppliers provides excellent after sales support. Look for references and a dealership that offers 24/7 phone support.

Measuring Your Room for a Carpet

Measuring a room is relatively easy but you should take time to ensure that your measurements are accurate and that you avoid some common pit falls. Carpets come in different widths so it is important to consider which carpet you are interested in order to calculate just how much you will need.

A rectangular room

Sketch out your room, marking the position of any doorways. Measure the length and width of the room remembering to take the size, including doorway recesses. If the room has alcoves measure the width and depth of them, in case joins are required. In many homes the walls do not run perfectly straight so it’s best to measure the walls on both sides of the room.

A landing

Sketch the area clearly showing doorways and mark where the stairs meet the landing with an x. Measure the length and width again remembering to measure in to the doorways. Also measure over and including the top stair so that the carpet can cover the top stair in one piece (a join on the nose of a stair would cause premature wear).

A hall

Sketch the area clearly showing doors and where if applicable, the stairs begin. Measure in to all doorways.

The stairs

There is no need to measure the length of the stairs, simply:

Count the number of stairs

Measure the length of the tread and riser of one stair

Measure the width of one stair

Calculating the amount of carpet required for a Hall stairs and landing can be more complicated than for other rooms and therefore we always recommend that you use a professional measuring service.

Laying Your Carpet

How to lay your carpet depends upon which carpet you choose, a good underlay not only prolongs the life of your carpet, but offers noise resistance and ads warmth to your to your rooms also.
